Little Ripples
The web has long been touted as having super powers: from democratizing oppressive governments, to educating underdeveloped nations, the changes we imagine the internet can bring are significant. But sometimes it just seems to work on a much smaller and more personal scale; little ripples or web activity that supplement and not supersede normal life. Take, for example, Geni, a new genealogical website that lets you make your own family tree. Nothing new here really, except the interface is inviting and easy to use. I started a small tree and invited a few relatives. In 7 days it has grown to 120 members. Suddenly I have an understanding of my family tree that didn't exist before, plus a potential way to contact long lost cousins. Of course, it is these little ripples that let the bigger things work. Ebay, for example, is a massive economy built on such ripples. So start some ripples of your own at Geni.com and see who you discover.

Are You Analyzing Your Traffic?
No serious hosting plan would not offer some kind of stat-tracking software to help visualize your log data and let you know if anyone is visiting your website. But are you using that data? Do you even check it?
There was a time when tracking was limited, and numbers were easily confused, blown out of proportion or just misunderstood. "I had a million hits!" sounds impressive, but hits do not translate directly to visitors. Nowadays, however, there is a growing sophistication to interpreting log files. Since Google purchased Urchin, the newly branded "Analytics" has become an impressive option. Other industry heavy-weights such as WebTrends continue to provide endless ways to cut through the data. More light-weight options like the new "Clicky" even show real time traffic, as it happens, page by page. Instead of bragging about hits, you can now count heads in specific cities around the globe.
Incidentally, on July 14 as an example, 3W Studios enjoyed 714 visits from China, but only 1 from South Korea and 4 from Japan (in Kawasaki, Minato, Meguro and Osaka respectively).

But the real reward comes when you can tie these numbers into the wider picture. For example, a client recently experienced a modest rise in traffic over a 6 week period after launching a redesign. When that same period's contact data was examined, it was equal to the six months before it. The modest rise in traffic was actually translated into more conversions; a clearer message and an easier-to-use website. Priceless information.

Santa Rosa County Makes a Move
The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners, in conjunction with the Florida-Alabama Transportation Planning Organization, is conducting a transit feasibility study for Santa Rosa County. The exploration is being led by Kidd Public Relations, with website support from 3W Studios. The study intends to pave the way for the county to expand its public transportation services. Starting July 19, visitors to the site will be able to complete a short survey as part of the data collection for this project.
