Patron Saint of the Internet
On his 82nd birthday, Pope John Paul II announced during a special mass, that he would soon officially name a patron saint of the Internet. Declaring that the Internet is a "valuable tool to preach the gospel" John Paul takes a new stance from the church's previous view that the Internet spreads immoral information, and should be regulated. Last year he made mention that the Saint Isidore of Seville, a 7th century author credited for writing the first encyclopedia, would be named the "patron saint of Internet users and computer programmers."

"Digital Divide" Nearing Close
A study conducted by the University of California, Los Angeles indicates that the socio-graphic gap between U.S. persons accessing the Internet and those who do not, when measured by level of education may be closing.
A study done by the government showed that those who have access to the Internet, is not separated by urban vs. rural users. The Pew Research Center has also found that the divide between Caucasian and African-American Internet users is narrowing.
These findings have led President Bush and others to call for a reduction in government spending on programs that bring computers to low-income Americans.
The Administration also contests that since September 11, the government has new priorities. Opposing sides argue that although more minority American's have access to computers and the Internet, many still need training to search for information on jobs, health or financial information.
Congress will make a decision later this fall, which will determine how $110 million in computer education funding will be used.
Three programs spawned from this funding include constructing computer labs for after-school programs, adult-education use and helping local groups install computer networks.

Antidote to AADD
Combining Message Media and Supportive Media
Consumers today are bombarded with countless advertisements. Sources say people are subjected to between 3,000 and 14,000 ad messages per day. With this level of sensory overload, consumers have more information than they need or want and may develop AADD or "advertising attention deficit disorder."
But have no fear advertisers, the antidote to this disorder lies not in the elimination of the media, but in the grouping. All media can be categorized into two groups: Message Media and Supportive Media.
Message Media are those types of media that are used to announce or introduce the brand to the target audience. They are primarily TV, radio, and print.
Supportive Media are any forms of media that open the door to heightened communication between the company and the consumer, specifically point-of-purchase, direct response, and out-of-home. The relationship between the two groups is imperative. While one group forms the brand image, the other fosters the relationship with the consumer.
FACT: The primary vehicle within message media is TV
FACT: The primary vehicle within supportive media is the Internet
What this means is that to create a successful campaign amidst the myriad competition, advertisers must not eliminate the Internet. It is cost effective and is virtually the best place to reach people at work. The Internet is engaging, and allows the consumer to research the product infinitely. No other medium has the capability to acquire information from the consumer like the Internet.
