Video is the new blog

Remember when you couldn't read about the web without seeing the word 'blog'? Now, suddenly, we don't even read half of the web, we watch it. This is the election campaign, after all, where Hillary Clinton announced her candidacy through an online video. Video is the new blog. Of course, this isn't news. But what is interesting is that, like New York fashion reaching the high street, video is now as common a request as a contact page. It's a good job then, that 3W Studios knows all about video.

Video, By Demand

Ok, it's pretty modest, and we're certainly not the first to do it; but we've done it. 3W Studios now has a YouTube channel. We didn't set out to conquer online video, but after a series of clients needed our services, we ended up with a little collection of material. Add to that our recent video blogs for Kidd Public Relations, and you've got yourself a few hours of footage.

What's interesting is not that we did this, it's that a growing number of clients are demanding that video be part of their site. With broadband being commonplace, and competition increasingly intense, any edge will do. And users expect more these days, especially in some arenas like real estate investing. Bring your project to life with a 3D tour!

3W Studios isn't quite ready to declare itself a video production studio, but we are willing and able to handle a host of online video needs, from original animation, to editing, to simple compression, we can bring it to life. Here are a few video features that we've handled recently.

Florida Housing TV Commercial

Wakulla Bank

IDT

Hearthside Grove

Usability Habits Report: Users won't wait.

Jakob Nielsen, self-styled usability 'guru' (and holder of the title "World Wide Web's Worst Hairdo") unveiled his annual report into user habits last month. The report finds that web users are getting more 'ruthless' in their browsing habits. Although we've long been skeptical of some of his musings (such as, put your logo in the top left because that's the convention) there are some hints of wisdom in his conclusions.

Nielsen was quoted as saying "People want sites to get to the point, they have very little patience. I do not think sites appreciate that yet, they still feel that their site is interesting and special..."

More users today have a specific task in mind when they get online, and don't have time to waste. This task-focused browsing means that search engines drive the web. Now, apparently, only 25% of users visited a home page on their way to the information they wanted. The rest drilled right down to the content from their search results, bypassing the homepage altogether. This makes the internal organization of a site even more crucial; forget the notion of a website being a virtual office with a front door. It's more like a swimming pool, with users diving in wherever they like.

The good news is that more users accomplished what they set out to do; thanks both to improved design and more experience with the web in general. However, users continue to display a lack of patience with "bells and whistles". Get to the point, and quickly.
